Instead of an initial interview, Kotomi jumped straight into the design process, bringing all her sketches and ideas. She used a combination of tops and skirts in her designs, and together we decided to create a skirt.

Kotomi lent me a pair of her jeans to upcycle, and we also used black fabric provided by one of my professors. This combination of materials set the foundation for the skirt design.

SKIRT construction

SKIRT construction

We decided on a half-denim, half-black fabric design. I began cutting the necessary pieces for the skirt, while Kotomi was actively involved, helping to guide the process and ensure her vision came to life.

RUFFLE detailing

RUFFLE detailing

Kotomi wanted ruffles incorporated into the design, so she played a crucial role in pinning the ruffles onto the skirt. We worked back and forth, adjusting and fitting the ruffles to get the perfect look.

Mannequin adjustments

The garment was built directly on the mannequin, with Kotomi assisting in every step. We continually checked the fit and made adjustments together, ensuring everything was aligned with her preferences.

FINAL TOUCHES

FINAL TOUCHES

Once the ruffles were placed and the fitting was finalized, we maintained the original zipper and button structure from the jeans. The finished skirt reflected Kotomi’s vision, created collaboratively from start to finish.
